When we look at how much we as humans get stuck in our feedback loops, it seems pretty overwhelming. We appear to be constantly fighting; among family members, neighbours, nations. We fear ourselves, we fear others, we fear the past, we fear the future. We are taking medications by the tons to escape ourselves and spending billions on police and military services trying to contain our rage. In this big city, something is not quite working.
However, human beings need incentive to change and unfortunately, sometimes it is big, painful incentive. Living a life of too many martinis, or losing too many jobs, or too many marriages, can be great motivators for change. And this is the key to our own evolution. In order to move from A to B, B has to at least be a little more comfortable than A. Otherwise we would be content to remain in A. Knowing that, we can begin to see our discomfort, our pain, our challenges, as manure for our own growth and evolution. The challenge as I see it in the current world is that we are getting lost, getting stuck, in our states of discomfort because we are unable to see another way of being. What we experience as humans is the force of the mind and ego, and they have a very different agenda, which is the opposite of change or evolution. They want us to stay the same. Our minds and egos have taken up so much time and space telling us that it is someone else’s fault, or that I am not good enough, or that nothing will ever work out. In that fog, we are unable to see alternatives to this current experience. We are stuck in our feedback loops, and not taking advantage of the opportunities that pain gives us for growth. We are believing that the noise that is coming from inside of us is the truth.
And so what are the alternatives? We all know and feel that feelings are difficult if not impossible to shut off. They are overwhelming waves that come on and we are compelled to ride them or push it down with disgust, annoyance or fear. But there they are and there they remain. Our entry point then becomes the mind, which believe it or not, is much easier to manage, with a little training. Not connecting to our thoughts as they move through, finding the space in between the thoughts, and eventually finding extended periods of silence, slows down and eventually cuts the feedback loop. We stop sending signals and energy to the feelings, energy that keeps the feedback loop alive and well. We stop feeding the imprints rationalizations and reasons as to why it needs to stay alive. Without that energy, the imprints begin to unwind, unravel, and dissolve. This is not an overnight process, but change happens and it is real. Far more real than any feedback loop.
So now we are bringing in silence instead of feedback loops. When we allow ourselves to bring in silence, what we really begin to introduce into our being is the energy of pure potential. Below mind, below body, below time, is the organizing force of everything. The ancient Vedas tell us that the birthplace of everything is that pure potential, otherwise known as consciousness. Our world, the universe and everything in it is organized by that energy. It is a force of creativity and order. When we enter into states of real silence, meditation, or creative flow, we purposely invite the energy of pure potential - the energy of order - into our being. And as thousands of years will demonstrate, that order shows up as states of peace, health, compassion. Stepping into the flow a few minutes every day through meditation, through generating compassion, through feeling gratitude, are all ways to contribute to that state of order within you and around you. Each moment is a drop of consciousness, a drop of potential bringing you out of the chaos and closer to Self.
